Box out

by John Coy

What Critics have said-

Coy keeps the action zipping along, capturing the excitement of basketball in passages that detail every move and free throw in games by both the boys' and girls' teams.
-Maryann Grossman

BOX OUT is an excellent book. It provides plenty of play-by-play basketball action, plenty of teenage anxiety involving school, parents, and romantic issues, as well as plenty of possible discussion topics for teens and adults. It is well worth reading.

If you are interested in a well-developed, realistic sports drama presenting a variety of recognizable characters, you'll enjoy Box Out.
-John Klein-Collins

In a world of black and white, Coy writes about the grey area. Readers will either cheer or jeer at this book, but the subject is very relevant in student life today.

Quotes from book-

“‘I’ve got my own road, Dad. I travel it myself.’' -Liam

"I'm so proud Liam, if no one spoke up when they were uncomfortable, nothing would get done." -Mom

"Love is hard, life is hard, what are you gonna do about it?" -Jack

Video 1- I chose this video because its all baskteball. All these shots look impossible, but obviously are not. That's like what Liam thought about the prayer issue. He thought it was impossible to change it, but he tried, and it did change. He kept trying, and he got it done. These guys try over and over til they get it right.

Video 2- I chose this video because it reminds me of the way the girls lost their season. The girl shoots a half-courter, and drains it. It shows that when you make your best attempt, you can win anything. She threw the ball hopoing with all her heart it would make it. You just have yo hope, and things will happen. It shows that people can do amazing things.

Quote 1- When he says he has to travel his own road, he is correct. He is saying that he can't have anyone do things for him. Everything that he does, has to be by himself. He has to make the right decisions. No one else can live his life for him. He can do many things, and they are all by himself. His mom, his dad, his grandma, none of them can travel the road for him.

Quote 2- When Liam's mom said this, I thought that she is absolutely right. It puts everything in perspective. If no one says anything, nothing would change. Everyone would just agree to things, but no one would ever You have to speak up if you think that things are going bad. If nothing is getting better, you have to be the change. You can not just sit around.

Quote 3- When he says that life is hard, it's true. You can't just sit around and complain about it. You have to make things better for yourself. You have to deal with it and wait things out. You can't just hope though, you have to make it better, so you can live happy. He wants to know what you will do about it. You have to figure it out.
